Monsignor Donovan High School Deploys Bluesocket WLAN Solution

Las Vegas, Nev. -Interop 2007 - May 22, 2007 -Bluesocket, Inc., (www.bluesocket.com) the leader in open wireless network, security and management solutions, today announced that Monsignor Donovan High School (MDHS) in Toms River, N.J., has deployed a wireless network across its entire campus using the company's BlueSecure technology. The high school recently worked with Bluesocket and systems integrator PacketLogix to upgrade its wireless LAN (WLAN) network, completing a 3-year project that gives all MDHS students laptop computers and secure wireless access as part of their education program.

In 2004, the school's IT department team realized the need for an overhaul of its WLAN network, which was difficult to manage, made for sluggish computer operations and ran into several security problems. That year, Eliot Perez, the school's director of technology, attended the annual Interop conference to find a new solution to the school's wireless needs.

"We had an ambitious goal of deploying a WLAN network that would support all of our students, in the hopes of enhancing their educational experience," said Perez. "At the same time, we needed a solution that would protect a complex network, but require minimal upkeep. We were immediately drawn to Bluesocket's BlueSecure Controller because of its intuitive user interface and advanced security capabilities. What's more, it offered us the flexibility to easily expand the system to meet the needs of a growing student enrollment."

PacketLogix, a Bluesocket partner, helped MDHS install a BlueSecure 2100 Controller, which offered a Client Scanning feature that allowed administrators to quarantine clients that had viruses prior to logging onto the system. MDHS's system initially allowed 250 students to access the WLAN network and, each year following, the school expanded the network to support 250 additional students.

"Right away, the BlueSecure Contollor eased our security issues," said Perez. 'The Client Scanning feature takes care of any potential threats and suspect traffic on the network has been reduced tremendously, as well. With the Bluesocket solution, we're able to deal with security issues at a much faster rate."

Most recently, the school upgraded to a BlueSecure 5200 Controller and incorporated BlueSecure Access Points (APs) into the network. The new system supports all 1,000 MDHS students and provides Internet access in all 60 classrooms, as well as outdoor locations such as the school's quad. Eventually, the school will replace all of its legacy APs with additional BlueSecure APs, even further enhancing overall network performance.
